Collection: Shirley Cartey

Shirley Cartey has worked with mixed media processes for many years but in the last three years rediscovered printmaking as a process. She has been experimenting with print and collage ever since. After a recent move to the US, Shirley was introduced to photo-etching and has used this process to express her experience of city life in New York.

Artist Statement

My photo-etchings are a combination of images taken in New York from old bill boards, assembled collage pieces and drawings, made with ink and pencil. They are made from my impressions of the city and imprints of what has taken place in various locations, revealing layer upon layer of storytelling. As I peel back the layers through the lens I hope to find something intrinsic at the very heart of the place and then incorporate something personal through pencil or brush.
